People who are stuck in life tend to focus on two things: 1) what they have lost, and 2) negative things they believe are coming. They also are likely to devalue what they already have. This was true for the widow in 2 Kings 4. 

“A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, ‘Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.’ So Elisha said to her, ‘What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?’ And she said, ‘Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil’” (2 Kings 4:1-2).

The widow spoke out of her unresolved disappointment and fear:

• I had a good husband
• I had prestige and security
• The creditors are coming
• My sons will be taken away

Elijah’s response to the widow’s pleas was almost certainly not what she expected. Consider what he did not do: 

• He did not give her money
• He did not pray for her
• He did not preach her a sermon
• He did not rebuke the devil
• He did not suggest she go to a financial planner

What the Prophet Elijah did was bring a long-term solution through revelation. When we encounter a prophetic culture, we will have our eyes opened to: 

• What we have
• Who we are
• What our potential is
• Seeing God’s promises

Prophetic ministry helps us take our eyes off of what we think we don’t have and causes us to see what we already do have. Because of media and social media, we live in a time where this is more crucial than ever. Those who feed on these will build faith for what they don’t have (whether it be possessions, appearance, accomplishments, etc.). The “have nots” are watching the supposed “haves” and are receiving the message that they are inferior and at a disadvantage in life. 

Let me say that again: The “have nots” are watching the supposed “haves” and are receiving the message that they are inferior and at a disadvantage in life. 

If you feel stuck and at a disadvantage, hear these words: You already have something which is the key to breakthrough and momentum. It might be a gifting, an idea, a skill, a relationship, or something else. Say out loud: I already have it. 

As we read on 2 Kings 4, we gain further instruction and insight: 

 “Then he said, ‘Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.’ So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, ‘Bring me another vessel.’ And he said to her, ‘There is not another vessel.’ So the oil ceased. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, ‘Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest’” (2 Kings 4:3-7).

Breakthrough happens when we start putting faith in what we have – One of my favorite declarations is from Exodus 14: My forward movement causes Red Seas to part. As I respond to the direction I believe God is leading, then I restart the momentum in my life and dramatically increase the likelihood of seeing miracles happen.

There is one more truth I want to share with you before closing. It’s this: Debt with a purpose can sometimes be beneficial. It is interesting that a woman who was already in debt was told to go into more debt by borrowing vessels. 

In general, I believe that going into debt is a negative step (except in purchasing appreciating items like homes). Even so, I have been in seasons in my life where I needed to go into debt by faith. I did not want to see a credit card or loan as the answer, but there were times when I had to make this choice. We may need to overcommit in time, money, or emotional energy in certain seasons as we seize a moment of opportunity or breakthrough that is before us. In conclusion, we can get our momentum back by allowing the prophetic anointing to open our eyes to what we already have. It will cause us to “look up and see the fields are white for harvest” (John 4:35). We will see there is something to partner with right now to enable us to get “unstuck” and into Red Sea-opening forward movement.
