12 Spiritual Experiments to Try

God wants to co-labor with our ideas and experimentation. Consider what Peter did. “Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea, and Peter said, ‘Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.’  So He said, ‘Come.’ And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus” (Matthew 14:25-29). This seemed to be Peter’s idea, not God’s.

Daniel and his friends did a ten day experiment concerning what they ate. This did not appear to be a command from heaven, but, more likely, an idea from them. “So Daniel said . . . ‘Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then let our appearance be examined before you . . . So he consented with them in this matter, and tested them ten days. And at the end of ten days their features appeared better . . . than all the young men who ate the portion of the king’s delicacies. (Daniel 1:11-15).

Good parents are not expecting their children to have a slave mentality and only do things when commanded. They want their sons and daughters to feel empowered to try new things and experiment. We as God’s children are empowered to to break out of ruts and routines by attempting new things – because there is no progress unless someone is trying something new. Here are twelve potential experiments you could try. You could do one or more for thirty days, ten days, one week, or whatever time span you choose.

  1. Attaching faith to upcoming events experiment – Look at your calendar of upcoming commitments and responsibilities. This could be for the next day, next week, next month, etc. Speak life over each commitment or responsibility. “Tomorrow is a day of victory and forward movement. My time with my family will be strong. My meeting with my team is going to be filled with supernatural wisdom. I am excited about getting to pay my bills as well.” As we attach faith to our upcoming happenings, we drastically increase the likelihood of great things happening.
  2. Thanksgiving rampage experiment – “In everything give thanks” (1 Thessalonians 5). Something wonderful will happen in us and through us when we are radically thankful to God and people. And this will be even more powerful as we are specific in why we are thankful for them.
  3. Testimony feast experiment – “Faith comes by hearing” (Romans 10:17), and one of the best ways to increase our faith is through hearing testimonies of God’s power and goodness. I heard about two men who were on a ten hour drive to get home. They decided to experiment and share testimonies of what God has done for the whole trip. As you can expect, by the time they got home, they were on fire with faith and encouragement.
  4. Fasting experiment– There are many types of fasts, including only water fasts, Daniel fasts, media fasts, or negativity fasts. As we eliminate a normal aspect of our life and make extra time for connecting with God, we give God something powerful to work with in our lives.
  5. Mega-doses of scripture and teachings experiment – In the 1990’s, I heard an interesting counseling technique by Bill Johnson. If someone would want to meet with him, he would prescribe meat-doses of God’s Word and presence and say, “After doing this, come and see me next week.” Many of these after consuming large doses of the Bible, audio messages, and deeper prayer did not even need to see Bill the following week.
  6. Praying in the Spirit experiment – “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself” (1 Corinthians 14:4). Increasing your praying in the Spirit is positively spiritually flammable.
  7. Daily communion experiment – As we release our faith in consistent communion, we are setting ourselves up for the benefits of our salvation to manifest like never before.
  8. 100+ declarations a day experiment – I carry around a declaration clicker (tally counter) and purpose to make at least 100 faith declarations a day about God’s promises, my biblical identity, prayers I have prayed, and the increase of blessings. It is life-changing!
  9. Practice enjoying yourself in the Lord experiment – “Delight (enjoy) yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalms 17:4). This experiment will help us face and overcome many of the devil’s lies, and help us move further into the joy of the Lord.
  10. Family dreaming experiment – Gather your family (or another group) and give each person an opportunity to share their dreams and aspirations for the future.
  11. Soaking prayer experiment – Spend 15 minutes or more a day with worship music playing, not speaking, listening to Holy Spirit, and “soaking” in God’s love and goodness.
  12. High level listening experiment – Take your listening to a higher level through good body language, eye contact, excitement, repeating back what you have heard, and asking good questions. See how this impacts you and others.

These are ideas for you to consider. You will come up with others. I believe some of your experiments will change your life and will play a big part in your personal victory and influence. It certainly has been that way for me. As I experimented with laughing at lies, declarations, believing in people, and in being thankful, I found weapons and keys that have been incredibly powerful for me.

Let’s be the research and development part of the body of Christ and make life better for others through our discoveries.
