Hearing God Through the Wrong Filter Part 2

Hearing God Through the Wrong Filter Part 2

By Steve Backlund

What do you believe God most wants to tell you? Or, put another way, what does He most want you to hear Him saying? I believe the most important things He wants us to hear every day are:

  • He loves us unconditionally
  • He is well-pleased with us
  • Through Jesus, we are worthy to receive all of God’s blessings
  • We are a new creation and righteous in Him

Why do many believers rarely or never hear these things? If God is saying them to us, why do we hear something different? I believe it is because we have a faulty internal “filter” that warps what we hear. Because of preconceived ideas, insecurities, pride, past experiences, and deficient New Covenant knowledge, we cannot hear what is really being said to us.

This is part two of this topic of strengthening our internal filter to hear what God is really saying. In
part one I shared what I believe are the seventeen most important chapters of the Bible to hear the rest of the Bible through. You can access part one here

Hebrews chapter 5:11-14 gives us a key to having the right filter to hear God accurately. In chapter five, the writer of Hebrews has been diving deep into truths about a mysterious Old Testament character named Melchizedek. He stops sharing about him and says “of whom we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing” (Hebrews 5:11) He then gives a reason for this dullness in hearing (in verse thirteen) when he says the Hebrews were “unskilled in the word of righteousness”.

We are unskilled in the word of righteousness if we believe we become unrighteous when we do an unrighteous act. To be skilled in the word of righteousness means that we believe we are righteous, even if we do an unrighteous act. Obviously, some might use this truth as an excuse for sin, but we cannot allow the fear of error to cause us to miss important scriptural truths like this.

So here is my point from Hebrews five. If we are unskilled in the word of righteousness, we will become dull of hearing.
This dullness results from our belief that God is more concerned about getting us to act righteous than us believing we are righteous Nobody wants to listen to a voice that is primarily focused on our faults and where we need to change. This is not the message our Father wants us to hear from Him; but a wrong filter, resulting from being unskilled in the word of righteousness, causes many to avoid God's voice or to live in constant condemnation and unworthiness because they are mishearing what is really being said.

A good model for us is what happened in Matthew 3 at the end of the chapter when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. Jesus heard these words, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased” (vs 17). He heard these words before He started his ministry. They were foundational for anything else Father God was saying. If He did not have revelation on this, everything else His Father would say after that would be misinterpreted because of a faulty filter caused by poor beliefs.

What I am sharing here is incredibly important to have a healthy connection with God. It is also a key to emotional health. Let us press into New Covenant realities like never before. As we do, we will increasingly hear the life-giving words that are really being spoken to us.
