You Give Them Something to Eat

You Give Them Something to Eat

By Steve Backlund

God has empowered us to provide Him with something to work with which will supernaturally meet seemingly impossible needs. Consider the following account from the Gospel of Matthew.

Jesus was ministering to a group of over 5,000+ late in the day, and His disciples said. “‘Send the multitudes away, so that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.’  But Jesus said to them, ‘They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.’ And they said to Him, ‘We have here only five loaves and two fish’” (Matthew 14:15-16).

Jesus saw this great need differently than His disciples. He said, “
You give them something to eat.” This tells us that God has empowered us to bring change to situations that seem impossible! This is a vital truth for the hour we are living in. We can look around the world right now and see many needs that seem impossible. We are tempted to believe that the seeming little we have cannot make a big difference in these situations; but we can!

Yes, what we have and what we do will make a difference! When we give God something to work with, God can multiply it more than we could imagine! I love that in these verses, Jesus didn’t create food out of thin air. Instead, He took what the disciples had to offer, blessed it, multiplied it, and used it to feed
at least five thousand. He will do the same today.

Here are 6 ways you can make a difference in seemingly impossible circumstances:

  1. Find a cause or purpose for your life - We cannot commit ourselves to every problem, cause, or need, but we can make a difference in one or more. What problem is God calling you to bring breakthrough to? We can get clues for the causes we are to serve by asking: !) What need makes me cry? 2) What need makes me mad because people don’t care enough about it? 3) What makes me ask, “Why isn’t someone doing something about this?” In Nehemiah chapter 1, Nehemiah wept when he heard the walls were down. It moved him, and he said “I’m going to do something about this!” He had little to no resources, but he fixed that problem. What moves you is an indicator of a cause or purpose you have grace to give what you have to make a big difference.
  2. Identify what you have - In 2 Kings 4:1-7 , the prophet Elisha asked the widow, “What do you have in your house?” She replied, “I have nothing except a little oil.” When we get under the influence of the prophetic, it helps take our eyes off what we think we don’t have to see what we do have. She already had the answer to her problem! It seemed small, but in the hands of the prophet, it multiplied! What do you have in skills, passion, money, possessions, and favor? The disciples recognized they had bread and fish. Identifying what we already have is an important step in this process.
  3. Dedicate what you have to the Lord - Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, do it heartily as unto the Lord and not to men.” Dedicate your home, your possessions, your skills, your passions, your hobbies etc. to the Lord. Say, “God, use these things for your glory and for the purpose and cause in my heart!”
  4. Get a plan - “Despise not the day of small beginnings” (Zechariah 4:10). Do something! It doesn’t matter how small. Ask God how you can move forward in making a difference.
  5. Partner with others - Jesus sent His disciples out two-by-two in Luke 10. Something powerful happens when we synergize with people who have the same passion!
  6. Attach faith - Pray this, “Lord, I give this to you and you will multiply it to make an incredible, supernatural difference.”

Everything great has a small beginning! It all starts with someone bringing what seems small and believing it’s making a difference! Those who believe they’re doing something significant are doing something significant.

Today, we have seemingly impossible societal needs occuring (homelessness, governmental oppression, divisions, sex trafficking, violence, and more). God is speaking to us and saying, “You give them something to eat. Give me something to work with, no matter how small, and watch what I do.”

Hope is the belief that the future will be better than the present, and I/we have the power to help make it so. Let’s rise up and watch the miraculous happen as we offer to God what we have.
